Here’s how the belt and pulley mechanism works: when the engine runs, it turns the pulley, which then rotates the belt. This movement delivers power to various components of the car, enabling functions like charging the battery, powering the steering system, and cooling the engine.
Let’s understand it through an example; when you turn on the A/C of your vehicle, the pulley delivers the power to the air compressor, which makes the cooling system work in the car. This makes the car ride feel like a breeze in humid temperatures.

Main Types of Car Pulleys

Crankshaft Pulley

Located at the bottom of the engine, this is responsible for driving the entire belt system that supports the engine. It transfers the power from the engine to the belt, which sets everything else in motion.

Alternator Pulley

This is usually found at the top of the system and is responsible for providing the power to charge the car’s battery. It helps spin the alternator, which generates electricity for the battery, which gives it out to other electronics in the vehicle.

Water Pump Pulley

It sits close to the radiator area, usually behind the grille found at the front of your vehicle. It is responsible for moving the coolant through the engine to regulate the car’s temperature. This helps the vehicle prevent overheating problems.

Power Steering Pump Pulley

Mounted on the side of the engine, this one provides power to the steering system. The generated power then helps you shift lanes and drive with ease.

AC Compressor Pulley

Found near the front of the engine bay, this fan belt pulley powers the A/C compressor. It’s one of the key components driven by the system, helping your vehicle stay cool when the air conditioning is turned on.

5 Common Car Pulley Problems

Now that we’ve covered the main types, let’s look at what can go wrong. Here are some common car pulley problems and how to fix them.

1. Squeaking or Screeching Noise

If you hear a high-pitched squeak every time you start the engine or press the accelerator, it could be due to pulley wear or a loose drive mechanism. This usually happens when the bearings that are used in this mechanism dry out or the belt isn’t tight enough.

 

To tackle this issue, try the following:

  • The belt might have loosened; tightening it can help.
  • Spray a conditioner to prevent squeaking and slipping of the belt.
  • Replace it if the noise persists.

2. Wobbling or Shaky Pulley

If it looks off-center or wobbles while spinning, it’s a warning sign. This usually means the bearings inside are damaged, or if it is bent due to wear or impact.

 

Here are a few fixes for a wobbling one:

  • Inspect for any visible bends in it. If it’s a minor bend, you might be able to bring it back to shape by applying force strategically or using special tools.
  • Replace, if it doesn’t spin smoothly or if it has a severe bend.
  • Make sure the bolt holding it is properly installed.

3. Burning Smell or Smoke

A strong burning smell from the engine area could point to a pulley stop, often caused by a seized or jammed one. When it stops spinning, but the drive mechanism keeps moving on its own, friction builds up. Such a situation can heat your engine.

 

Follow the following steps to deal with the problem better:

  • Stop driving immediately to avoid further damage to your vehicle.
  • Replace the seized one.
  • Inspect and replace the belt, too. Mostly, a seized one causes it to wear out.

4. Loose or Slipping Belt

If your belt keeps slipping off or feels too loose, a worn-out pulley could be to blame. As it fails to keep the driving mechanism tight, it results in the whole system losing its grip.

 

You’ll need to do the following to get it working again:

  • Check the tensioner spring mechanism
  • Replace the tensioner wheel if it’s not maintaining pressure
